The Monastery of Kom with its church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God is located in the northwest area of Lake Skadar, close to Zabljak Crnojevica, at the crest of Odrin Hill, which turns into the island during flood seasons, while during very dry summers it is possible to walk to the monastery on paths through the marsh.
Lake Skadar is the biggest in the Balkans. It is 44 km long and 14 km wide. Total area of lake is 391 square km, of which two thirds belong to Montenegro, and one third to Albania. The lake is one of the last freshwater swamp and the biggest bird reservation in Europe, the last residence of pelicans. The coast is swampy and covered with wide reed zone, and the surface of lake is covered with many water plants, yellow and white roses. Especially interesting is the plant water caltrop, which grows only in this area, as well as fishes sardine and carp. In 1983 year it was announced The National Park, which is the best proof of the extraordinary natural beauty it offers.
Tumultuous times in the history of Lake Skadar left traces which represent special cultural heritage.
In the heart of Zeta, in the basin of Lake Skadar, there are aproximately 15 monasteries and churches founded by medieval Zeta ruler families Balsic and Crnojevic. Shores, small islands and forests, bays and inlets, valleys and dales, ports and coastal lakes of Lake Skadar look very much like those at the Holy Mountain of Athos, and because of it` s both spiritual and natural beauty this area is rightfully named the Holy Mountain of Zeta. Monasteries Starcevo, Beska and Moracnik located on islands along the south coast of the lake, Obod in the village Rijeka Crnojevica, and Vranjina and Kom in the northwest part of Lake Skadar, shine like living pearls of orthodoxy.
The Monastery of Kom differs from other monasteries of Lake Skadar because of its inaccessibility and special features. Built on the hill, surrounded with protective wall with two gates and having bell – tower made of stone, it has the discrete and cautious view of the whole lake.
The monastery complex is divided into two parts, the first consisting of the church with the porch, located in the east side and separated from the other part. The other part consists of monastery lodgings – for monks which are built on the west side of the island and for guests which are attached to the “free” side of the kitchen, of the kitchen with the small dining room and of the big dining room which is also used as guest accommodation, especially in cold weather (it is situated farthest in the west of all mentioned buildings). Lodgings for monks, the kitchen and the dining room are connected in one entirety with the massive wooden porch similar to the church porch, and they on three sides, in the shape of the Cyrillic letter “ П”, “close” the squared space - the central platform, where most everyday activities take place. The forth (open) side of this covered platform has a view of the southeast monastery yard with “the east” gate of the entrance to the Monastery and of the exquisite panorama of Lake Skadar. On the east “end” of the north kitchen wing is standing the boldest part of this complex – the square bell – tower made of stone and it vigilances and warns everyone who approaches this holy place.
If we use Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, for the starting point, the easiest way to the Monastery of Kom is the Petrovac highway – going via the village Golubovci, over the river Moraca, via villages Ponare and others, for approximately 20 km towards Zabljak. Zabljak, nowadays in ruins, although in previous times was the residence of the Crnojevic family – until in the end of the fifteenth century Ivan Crnojevic moved it to Cetinje under the pressure of Turkish invasion, is the last point which can be reached by land. From this point there are, in the time of medium water level, about 7 more km to be crossed. Because the water level is changeable this approach to the Monastery of Kom is very often difficult, and it is easier to use the approach from Vranjina, small fishermen settlement named after the island Vranjina. Petrovac highway also leads from Podgorica to Vranjina, and from this point, after sailing for approximately 10 km towards Rijeka Crnojevica through picturesque regions of Lake Skadar, we finally reach the God sheltered Monastery of Kom.
